Legends of Enoch

Since THE FORBIDDEN KNOWLEDGE OF ENOCH has been published, I have had the opportunity to speak with a larger group of people than I normally would have before. As I have spoken with many of these people, (with some being well educated) I have noticed that there is a general misunderstanding of the Biblical patriarch known as Enoch. I think this has happened because for the majority of people, their only knowledge of Enoch comes from the Book of Genesis in the Bible, and to be truthful, there isn’t much there. The vast majority of people appear to completely unaware that there is a large tradition and a number of legends that surround this mysterious patriarch.

Today I would like to explore some of the mystery that surrounds Enoch and also some of the legends that are related to him. Enoch has a rich traditional history that is virtually unknown to the general public, but at the same time is familiar to many because bits-and-pieces of this tradition have made it into people’s minds over the years. Here we will take a more Esoteric view of Enoch and some of the more interesting stories and legends associated with him.

All that we can learn from the Book of Genesis on the subject of Enoch and his life is that he was the seventh of the patriarchs; the son of Jared, father of Methuselah, grand-father of Lamech, and great-grandfather of Noah. Traditionally it has been accepted that his was a life of “eminent virtue”, so much so that he is described as “walking with God”; and that after 365 years of life, tradition says “his earthly pilgrimage was terminated, not by death, but by a bodily translation to heaven”.

The patriarch Enoch is very closely connected to the esoteric belief system and its early history. There are a number of people who believe that Enoch introduced the more speculative principles* or ‘mysteries’* into the esoteric system and “that he originated its exclusive character”. He is also thought to have given a “decisive character to the rite of initiation and to add to the practice of Divine worship, the study, and application of human science.”

(Note* - These ‘speculative principles’ or ‘mysteries’ that are so often spoken of by the followers of the esoteric, are actually what we call science and mathematics today. This is one of the methods of how this information has been hidden. Most are familiar with how large parts of modern science have their origins in what is known as alchemy and the occult of the Middle-Ages.)

The years of his life are thought by many to have a mystical meaning, in the fact that they are equal to the days of the year. “In all the ancient rites this number has occupied a prominent place”, typically because it was thought to be a representation of the sun and its annual course through the sky, and for many a “peculiar’ object of divine worship.”

But the truth is that we know nothing of the early history of Enoch. It is believed by many that it is highly probable that he, like the other descendants of Seth, lived a pastoral life in the lands surrounding Mount Moriah. He appears to have been different from the other patriarchs in only that he was ‘enlightened by Divine knowledge’ that had been imparted to him by the ‘Host of Heaven’ under the direct orders of the ‘Ancient of Days’, which is how Enoch typically referred to God.

There are a number of traditions related to the learning of this venerable patriarch and how he came to have this knowledge. One tradition states that he received from God the gift of wisdom and knowledge, and that “God sent him thirty volumes from heaven, filled with all the secrets of the most mysterious sciences”.

The Babylonians supposed him to have been “intimately acquainted with the nature of the stars; and they attribute to him the invention of astrology”. The Rabbis maintain that he was taught by God and Adam how to sacrifice, and how to worship the Deity in the correct way. The Kabbalistic book of Raziel says “that he received the Divine mysteries from Adam”, through the direct line of the preceding patriarchs.

The early Greek Christians thought Enoch to have been identical with the first Egyptian Hermes, who lived at Sais. They say he was the first to give instruction on the celestial bodies and that he foretold the Flood of Noah that was to overwhelm his descendants. They also believed that he built the Pyramids and engraved figures of artificial instruments and the elements of the sciences, fearing the loss of the memory of man in great destruction to come. Eupolemus, a Greek writer, makes him the same as Atlas, and attributes to him (as the Pagans did too) the invention of astronomy.

In the ‘Oriental Antiquities’ a Jewish writer by the name of Bar Hebraeus is quoted in a passage which asserts that Enoch was the first to have invented books and writing; that he taught men the art of building cities; that he discovered the knowledge of the Zodiac and the course of the planets; that he instituted the worship of God by fasting, prayer, alms, offerings, and tithes.

These stories all have the same basic idea, Enoch was given Divine knowledge and taught people how to worship God. This is also supported by what little is contained within the Bible and by what is in the actual Book of Enoch itself. The next legend that we will look at comes largely in part from the esoteric Masonic tradition and their “Legend of Enoch”. The Masonic legend basically gives the same general information and ideas as the others above, I think the primary difference is that they expand upon the idea of the Greek Christians (and a few others) and that he built some type of building to preserve knowledge.

The legend says that Enoch spent many years of his life studying the Divine knowledge [sciences] and teaching them to his children and contemporaries, and instituting the rites of initiation into this Divine knowledge. Enoch is said to have passed many of his years in peaceful, pious, and useful life, until the crimes of mankind had increased to such a degree that in the expressive words of Holy-Writ, “every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was only evil continually”. It is at this point in Masonic tradition that Enoch is said to be, “disgusted with the wickedness that surrounded him, and appalled at the thought of it inevitable consequences”, fled to the solitude of Mount Moriah. It is at this point he is believed to have devoted himself to prayer and pious contemplation.

It was on this spot, first consecrated by Enoch’s patriarchal hermitage; it was further consecrated and made more holy by the sacrifices of Abraham, David, and King Solomon as recorded in the Bible. It is said that the “Shekinah” or ‘sacred presence’ of God appeared to Enoch and gave him those instructions that were to preserve the wisdom of the antediluvians and their world for their posterity. Enoch was also told that with only the exception of one family, that all that was, was going to be destroyed by the forthcoming flood.

This tradition follows with the belief that Enoch, after being inspired and instructed by the Most High and in commemoration of a wonderful vision, built a temple underground and dedicated it to God. His son Methuselah is said to have constructed the actual building. It is believed that Methuselah had no idea of his father’s motives for the temple.

This temple is said to have consisted of nine brick vaults, each one built beneath the other and they communicated by apertures that were left in the arch of each vault. The descriptions give the idea that each vault had an archway that had a number of symbols and openings that you had to shine light through in the proper sequence in order to open the door of each one and also to move on to the next one. This clearly gives the impression that this was an advanced locking system that incorporated ‘light’ as the key. No matter how you look at it, this is a rather advanced and modern like idea of a high tech locking system.

This is most likely were the story (or at least the idea) of the ‘Enochian Keys’ comes from, that many have ran across on the internet over the last few years. I think you can easily see that the idea of using light as a key to open a door could give rise to the stories that these ‘keys’ had some type of special power. It is also highly likely that it is also confused with, or at least mixed up with, the idea of ‘Enochian magic’, which comes from the name ‘Enochian’. This name is normally applied to the ‘occult’ or ‘angelic’ language that was recorded in the private journals of John Dee and his colleague Edward Kelley in the late 16th century England. Kelley claimed to be a spirit medium, who worked with Dee in his magical investigations. Both men claimed that the language was revealed to them by angles. The language is integral to the practice of Enochian magic. (Enochian: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enochian, Enochian Magic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enochian_magic) This ‘Enochian magic’ is a more modern idea and outside of the idea of the ‘keys’, which could have been taken from any number of Legends related to Enoch. But, this is a good example of how something modern, can be wrapped up with something ancient, and in the process give you the wrong impression about the whole story in general.

The Legend then goes on to say that, Enoch caused a triangular plated of gold to be made. Each side of the plate was a cubit long and encrusted with precious stones. This plate was then encrusted upon a stone of agate in the same form of a triangle. Then Enoch engraved on the plate in “ineffable characters” the one true name of the Deity. He then placed it on a cubical pedestal made of white marble, which was then placed within the deepest arch of the vault.

When this subterranean building project was completed, Enoch made and then placed a large stone door that attached to a great ring of iron that allowed it to be occasionally raised. This door was placed over the opening of the first arch of the first vault so it covered the aperture and so it could not be discovered. It is said that Enoch was only permitted to enter it but once a year; and on the death of Enoch, Methuselah, and Lamech, and after the destruction of the world by the deluge (flood), all knowledge of this great temple, and of the sacred treasure it housed, was lost.

This is where it all starts to get very interesting. It is said, written, and spoken of, by the Masons (and other esoteric groups) that this great temple or ‘vault of sacred knowledge’, is not a legend, but it was actually built, not only built, but at some point in the past somebody actually found this thing. The Masons and the other esoteric groups will only say that somebody ‘accidentally discovered’ this vault and that this individual was ‘worthy of the knowledge’, who, like Enoch, was engaged in the erection of a temple on the same spot.

The legend then goes on to inform us that after Enoch had completed the underground temple, he feared that the all the knowledge of the arts and sciences that he had cultivated with so much care, would be lost. Lost in the general destruction that he knew would come, for he had received a prophetic vision, showing him the end of all. It says that Enoch constructed two pillars, one of marble, to withstand the influence of fire, and the other made of brass, to resist the action of water. On the pillar of brass he engraved the history of creation, the principles of the arts and sciences, and the general doctrines of the speculative mysteries, as practiced in his times. The one of marble, he inscribed characters in hieroglyphics; that stated that near the spot where the pillars stood, a precious and sacred treasure was deposited in a great subterranean vault.

The historian Josephus gives an account of these pillars in the first book of his Antiquities. In it, he ascribes the pillars to the children of Seth, which tradition holds, Enoch was one of these children. The historian goes on to say “That their inventions might not be lost before they were sufficiently known, upon Adam’s prediction that the world was to be destroyed at one time by the force of fire and at another time the violence and quantity of water, they made two pillars-the one of brick, the other stone; they inscribed their discoveries on them both, that in case the pillar of brick should be destroyed by flood, the pillar of stone might remain and exhibit those discoveries to mankind, and also inform them that there was another pillar of brick erected by them. Now this remains in the land of Siriad to this day.”

It is then said in the legend, that Enoch having completed his labors, called his descendants around him on Mount Moriah. He then warned them in his most solemn manner of the on-coming destruction, a destruction that was the direct consequence of their wickedness and exhorted them to forsake their idolatries and return once more to the worship of the one true God. Enoch is then believed to have given all the secrets of the mysteries to Methuselah and then it is said that; And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty and five years. And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. (Genesis 5: 23, 24)

As you can see, these legends of Enoch are a little bit different than most legends you have heard over the years. The reason for this is because these are ‘Historical Legends’. They are known to be rooted in history, with actual people, places, and events, the problem is that they have been added to over the years, to the point that you can’t tell the difference between what is true and what was added later…or so we have always thought.

In case of Enoch we have something that we don’t normally have with other legends, historic or otherwise, and that is we have his book, the Book of Enoch and what I am about to tell you here is something that even the followers of the esoteric, don't appear to know. The Book of Enoch contains the missing piece that ties all the stories, legends, and myths, together into one understandable, logical, 100% totally believable timeline.

That ‘missing piece’ is in fact the ‘history of creation’ that is spoken of in the Legend of Enoch above. This 'history of creation' that was written upon the pillar of marble, is in fact the same symbolic story known as the ‘Dream Vision’ contained within the Book of Enoch. It is only when you know that the symbolic Dream Vision of Enoch is the 'history of creation' spoken of in the legend, and recorded by Josephus, that it is a point where history, legend, myth, and tradition, all come together in one place. And it will change everything you thought you knew about the our past.

  1. I think the Enoch research is scant at best.
Food for thought... this comes from the British Columbia Grand Lodge. The most important fact is that the legend started right her in the US. It is not ancient. There is more a connection to Nimrod than to Enoch. One Hermes, Thoth and Nimrod have many connections. Enoch has no connection to these entities. If you read the book of Enoch it was these kinds of entities and the mores that they were proponents of that caused Enoch to retreat from society in order to connect with G-d. So this doesn’t really jive with the book of Enoch either. So here is that article.

Some of the more fascinating "historical facts" about Freemasonry concern events which modern scholars believe are pure figments of imagination. The Legend of Enoch, for instance, makes great reading although there is not a shred of evidence to substantiate it. In his huge "History of Freemasonry"- Mackey included such stories for the record, and for the opportunity to demolish their premises. He viewed these legends as allegorical attempts to symbolize certain ethical or religious ideas and wrote: "Their symbolic interpretation cannot be rejected unless we reject the whole fabric of Freemasonry into which they have been closely interwoven."
